There’s no easy answer to learning how to be still and live in rest. From spending time with the Lord to trying to figure out the next career move or planning time with family and friends, life can be overwhelming sometimes. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, it can feel empty when you’re struggling to find purpose in your life. Or it can feel boring when you have a hard time finding weekend plans.
But in the midst of both of these extremes, there is a common theme. We are not leaning on God to provide us with rest. We either physically exhaust ourselves because we haven’t taken a moment to be still, or we allow our minds to run at full speed causing us to lose focus on what actually matters. In these moments, it’s like we’re on this constant search to find more time or purpose, when really the only thing we should be searching for is Jesus. Trust me, I’m guilty of these things too.
I’m thankful that there are so many scriptures that tackle this problem. Here are a few of my favorites.
The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still. – Exodus 14:14
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. -Psalms 23:2
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. – Matthew 11:28-30
God’s grace is completely sufficient, and He is faithful. He is enough for you, even when you don’t feel like you are enough for yourself. Sometimes we have to stop ourselves, and make time to reflect on His mercies. They are new every single morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).
God’s provision give us purpose, but He always seems to find a way to give us peace, no matter where we are in our lives. Rest in the fact that He knows exactly what you need. The only thing that should be running at full speed is the way you run to Him to sustain you. Allow your heart to surrender today. Rest and be still.
