If you live on the East Coast like me you’ve probably had your share of rainy days over the past week. My go-to in the middle of a storm is to grab my favorite coffee mug and a good read—throw in a sweet-smelling candle and a soft blanket and I’m in heaven.
Over the past few months, a lot of respected Christian authors have released new books and I’ve been swiping my card left and right in support (Special S/O to Amazon Prime- Y’all are the G.O.A.T). If you’ve been searching for a good book to curl up to as the weather starts to shift, look no further!
Here are 5 new reads waiting to join your bookshelf:
1. Letters to the Church by Francis Chan
I may be a little bias here because I love Francis Chan and his ministry, but this book is a must read! In Letters to the Church, Francis Chan shares how many churches have drifted from God’s desire for them. He talks about how we’ve strayed so far from what God calls Church and how radically different the modern-day Church looks from the Church in Scripture.
In his words, “We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It’s time for that to change…” Francis writes out of deep love for the Church and guides Christ-followers to live out God’s magnificent and beautiful vision for His Church, “a vision we may have lost but God has never forgotten.”
BTW, Amazon has it for $10 right now… skip your Starbucks run tomorrow and buy this book instead!
2. Gay Girl, Good God by Jackie-Hill Perry
This book is an amazing resource for the Church as the LGBTQ agenda expands. Poetic. Honest. Vulnerable. Convicting. Jackie’s personal testimony of same-sex attraction is an incredible testimony of God’s redeeming grace. As stated on the back of her book, “Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.” This book will be read for generations to come!
3. Quarter-Life Calling by Paul Sohn
20 somethings, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU! If you feel like you’re going through the motions and kinda floating through life, go ahead and click the purchase button. In this book, Paul shares his personal story of struggling with feelings of inadequacy, emptiness, and disillusionment in his 20’s. At twenty-eight, Paul traded in a high-paying job and sought a more meaningful life—one in which He pursued His God-given purpose relentlessly. He covers everything from demystifying your calling to whole life stewardship. I’m pretty sure I highlighted every page- no exaggeration here-!
4. If Only You Knew by Jamie Ivy
Y’all, this book is what transparency blog is all about! Jamie Ivy shares her personal story of stepping out of shame and insecurity into gospel freedom as she allowed God to turn her failures and frailties into testimonies of His faithfulness.
She states, “When we quit hiding, God gets the glory and we are able to fully embrace not only our relationship with Him, but also with one another. When we hide the mess we’ve been through, we also hide the redemption that God has lavishly poured on us…We can’t proclaim God’s grace until we expose our mess.” WHEW! COME ON NOW! This book reveals the beauty of being open before God and open before others. This book has the potential to set you free!
5. Recovering Redemption Bible Study by Matt Chandler
Okay, so this is not a book per say (Although they do have a book entitled Recovering Redemption so you can cop that too), but a life-changing Bible Study that will walk you through the root of the world’s brokenness and the ongoing power of redemption. Matt walks you through true repentance and the doctrines of justification, adoption, and sanctification with remarkable practicality and application.
He covers faith, repentance, shame, fear, anxiety, holiness, love, grace, and so much more. There are videos that align with each chapter that are all conveniently located on YouTube. This is a perfect study to go through with a friend, but beware, you will not complete all 12 weeks and not be changed! I’m pretty sure I’ll be recommending this gospel-centered study for years to come.
Soooo, what are you waiting for?
